Generally, a Class 3 Sign only Digital Signature is suitable for GST return filing. But the question is: “Which Type Of DSC Required For GST Return Filing and whether to buy an Individual DSC or an Organisation DSC.” For GST return filing, the requirement depends on the legal constitution of your business. While the DSC itself is almost always issued to a specific person (the Authorised Signatory), the type of certificate you need, Individual or Organizational, is determined by who that person is representing.
Identifying the Correct Type
The GST portal requires a Class 3 DSC for all filings. Whether you need an “Individual” or “Organisational” version depends on your business structure
| Business Type | DSC Type Needed | Who Signs? |
|---|---|---|
| Proprietorship | Individual | The Proprietor himself. |
| Private Limited Company | Organizational | Any Director/Authorized Signatory. |
| LLP / Partnership | Organizational | Any Designated Partner / Authorised Signatory. |
| HUF | Individual | Karta |
Individual DSC: Issued in your personal name using your personal PAN. This is sufficient if you are a sole proprietor.
Organizational DSC: Issued in your name, but also contains the Organisation’s Name and PAN. This is mandatory for corporate entities (Companies, LLPs) to prove you are signing specifically on behalf of that legal entity.
Key Technical Requirements
Before you can file your returns, you must register your DSC on the GST portal:
- PAN Mapping: The PAN encrypted in the DSC must match the PAN of the Authorised Signatory registered on the GST portal.
- Utility Tool: You must download and install the emSigner (or emBridge) utility from the GST portal to bridge your USB token with your browser.
- Validity: Ensure your certificate is valid (usually 2 or 3 years). If it expires, you must procure a new one and “Update DSC” on your GST profile.
We strongly recommend consulting with the website/portal admin where you are intending to use Digital Signature to know the correct type of DSC to get rid of all confusion.
